Why roof access, system condition and project-specific assessment matter when planning work around glazed roofs.
Start with the real roof
Non-fragility should never be inferred from appearance alone. The glass, framing, fixings, age, condition and method of support all affect how a roof should be treated. Existing records and a competent project-specific assessment are the starting point.
Access is part of the design problem
Roof access routes, maintenance tasks, cleaning requirements and adjacent work should be considered before installation or replacement. Where people may need to work near glazing, the wider access and protection strategy must be coordinated by the project team.
Replacement and refurbishment
An existing glazed roof may contain components from different periods or previous repairs. Surveys should identify what can be retained and where the proposed intervention changes the behaviour or safe use of the assembly.
