Residential & Luxury Homes
Little Mill
Rooflights & Atriums were appointed to design, supply and install a bespoke glazed link at Little Mill, creating a contemporary glass connection between two existing buildings.
The project required a carefully engineered structural glazing solution to accommodate an irregular, non-square opening between the adjoining structures. The finished installation combines minimalist architectural detailing with extensive glazing, allowing natural light to flood the space while maintaining clear views of the original buildings.
The Challenge
One of the principal challenges was the geometry of the existing opening. Unlike a conventional rectangular glazed link, the two buildings were not perfectly square or parallel, creating variations in dimensions and angles across the proposed installation.
This required careful site measurement, bespoke design detailing and close coordination to ensure the glazing could be manufactured accurately and installed within the available tolerances.
The restricted space between the buildings also presented significant installation challenges. With limited access and large glazed elements to manoeuvre into position, conventional manual handling methods were impractical.
Our Solution
Rooflights & Atriums developed a bespoke structural glass link designed specifically around the existing building geometry.
Particular attention was given to the irregular opening, ensuring the glazing dimensions, supporting framework and perimeter interfaces accommodated the differing angles and dimensions of the adjoining structures.
The design incorporated large glazed elevations and overhead glazing to create a light-filled connection, with minimal framing to maintain a clean, contemporary appearance.
Due to the size and weight of the glazed elements, specialist crane lifting equipment was utilised during installation. This required careful planning and coordination to safely lift, manoeuvre and position the glazing within the confined space between the buildings.
The combination of accurate surveying, bespoke fabrication and carefully planned crane operations enabled the installation to be completed despite the challenging site constraints.
The Result
The completed glazed link provides an elegant architectural connection between the existing buildings, transforming an awkward and irregular space into a striking feature.
The extensive use of glass creates a bright, open environment while allowing the original brickwork and surrounding architecture to remain visible.
This project demonstrates Rooflights & Atriums' expertise in bespoke glazed links, structural glazing and complex architectural glass installations, particularly where unusual building geometry, restricted access and specialist lifting operations require a tailored design and installation approach.
From contemporary glass extensions to bespoke glazed connections between existing buildings, Rooflights & Atriums provide specialist design, supply and installation services for residential, commercial and heritage properties throughout the UK.
