Design for the whole service life
Access is not limited to the installation period. Inspection, cleaning, seal replacement, controls and adjacent roof maintenance may all bring people close to glazed areas during the life of the building.
Identify routes and tasks
A useful access review identifies who needs to reach the roof, the tasks they will carry out, the equipment they require and how they will be protected. This allows glazing, guarding, walkways and maintenance zones to be coordinated.
Existing roofs require evidence
On refurbishment projects, original drawings may not reflect later alterations or deterioration. The condition and make-up of the existing assembly should be verified before access assumptions are made.
Discuss the project
Every building, opening and glazing package is different. This guidance is general and should be checked against the requirements, current standards and competent design information for the specific project.
