Begin with the application
The correct glass specification depends on geometry, span, support, loads, building use, internal conditions and the consequence of breakage. A specification should be developed for the actual opening and system rather than copied from an unrelated detail.
Balance safety and performance
Safety, thermal performance, solar control, light transmission, appearance and post-breakage behaviour need to be considered together. Improvements in one area can affect another, so priorities should be agreed early.
Confirm compatibility
Glass dimensions, edge conditions, coatings, seals, framing and drainage must be compatible with the selected glazing system and installation method.
Discuss the project
Every building, opening and glazing package is different. This guidance is general and should be checked against the requirements, current standards and competent design information for the specific project.
