Grade II Listed Heritage Patent Glazing Replacement | Lonsdale ThermGard

Rooflights & Atriums Ltd were appointed to undertake specialist roof glazing replacement works at Stalybridge Civic Hall, a Grade II listed historic building in Greater Manchester, delivering a sensitive refurbishment solution designed to preserve the building's architectural heritage while improving the performance and longevity of its roof glazing.

The project involved the replacement of approximately 200m² of existing patent glazing using the Lonsdale ThermGard thermally broken patent glazing system, combining traditional glazing aesthetics with modern materials and enhanced thermal performance.

Given the building's listed status, particular emphasis was placed on maintaining the character and appearance of the original roof glazing while introducing a durable, high-performance replacement system. The slimline aluminium glazing bars were selected to complement the historic architecture, retaining the traditional appearance of patent glazing while providing improved weather resistance and thermal efficiency.

The works required careful consideration of the existing supporting structure, glazing interfaces and weatherproofing details, ensuring the new system could be successfully integrated into the historic building fabric without compromising its architectural integrity.

The replacement glazing was designed to maximise natural daylight within the building's internal spaces, helping to preserve the bright, open character of this important civic landmark while reducing ongoing maintenance requirements.
